I will protect your pensions. Nothing about your pension is going to change when I am governor. - Chris Christie, "An Open Letter to the Teachers of NJ" October, 2009

The things I learn on NJ 101.5

This morning, in about a 5 minute span on my commute, I learned:

  • We're going to have a wave of teacher retirements, which is good, but it's not a bad thing to be an older teacher.
  • Abbott districts are ratholes that we throw money down.
  • It would be good to force smaller school districts to consolidate with those same Abbott districts in county-wide districts to save money.
  • No one wants to do that because everyone is corrupt.
Uh wha huh?

The biggest problem we have in NJ politics today is the media.

I also learned this morning on NJ101.5 that:

1) Hey... Long Island teachers are taking pay freezes which means NJ teachers should too! (especially since we know how highly paid NJ teacher are) But wait, Long Island teachers generally make a much higher salary than NJ teachers of similar characteristics (http://schoolfinance101.wordpress.com/2010/04/12/teacher-salaries-in-nj-and-ny-counties/)

2) That we'd be better off getting our kids educated in Georgia than NJ because they could get a HOPE scholarship to a GA public college, and of course, Georgia K-12 schools are at least as good as NJ schools and for much lower cost. But... in reality - see the final graph here: http://schoolfinance101.wordpress.com/?s=common+standards

3) And finally, Genius Jim opined (in response to a caller) that it is a silly assertion that schooling quality in NJ - or the decline of it (or even perceived decline) - could have any affect on housing values? Wow, I can't even begin to list the empirical research on this point.

It's amazing what you can learn in the two minutes after the traffic report before you remember to change the station to WBGO.

If air traffic controllers were as inaccurate as radio DJ's...

Oh, and why does everyone on 101.5 sound like they're broadcasting from the Batcave?
