I will protect your pensions. Nothing about your pension is going to change when I am governor. - Chris Christie, "An Open Letter to the Teachers of NJ" October, 2009

Blame Your Greedy Teacher!

Chris Christie is doing all he can to get kids to respect their teachers. Or not:
TRENTON — Gov. Chris Christie took his fight with the state’s largest teachers union directly to the kids today, telling a room full of Trenton students their schools were short on supplies because of greedy teachers union officials — not state aid cuts.
"There’s a lot of really great teachers in the state," said Christie. "But their union cares more about how much they get paid than they care about how well you learn."
A spokesman for the New Jersey Education Association said the remark was ironic considering the governor’s April statement that teachers were using students as "drug mules" by discussing state aid cuts with them.
"The governor apparently has a double standard, because he claimed that teachers were using kids as drug mules," said NJEA spokesman Steve Wollmer. "Now he’s speaking directly to children about matters political."
Christie apparently thinks these kids are as stupid as the punditocracy in this state - the pundits who take him at his word when he says he's not anti-teacher, he's anti-teachers union.

Trust me - they're not. They know their teachers will be at school on Monday, ready to help them, while their governor is flying in a private jet somewhere, working out his plans for the Palin-Christie ticket in 2012.

So when he tells these kids that their teachers are either greedy, or too stupid to know they are being manipulated by their union, it's not going to stick. Too bad I can't say the same for much of the NJ media.

This teacher-bashing may come back to bite. Somewhere, along time ago, I learned that 40% of NEA members (national level data) also belonged to the GOP. I suspect the percentage is lower in NJ, given the political activism of unions, but also the high percentage of independents. But, at some point, this teacher-bashing will bite Christie in his political posterior.

No way it can't.

Christie beat Corzine by less than 90K votes. NJEA claims about 200K members. They all have families. And that doesn't count AFT members.

I think we all agree that Corzine's support by his base was weak at best last election. ABC this time around will be Anybody Bur Christie, not Corzine.

And are there really many voters out there who didn't vote for Christie last time but will vote for him now?

He's playing with fire - unless he figures he's not running for a second term anyway, what with his new role in the Palin-Christie administration.

As always, thanks for stopping by, Professor Lugg!
