Appropriate that the Jersey Jazzman is speaking at Conklin Hall in Rutgers Newark. There is a proud history at Rutgers Newark of seeking educational equity and educational excellence. In 1969 Black students took over Conklin Hall to emphasize their demands for a Black Studies Department, more Black students and more Black faculty. All the demands were ultimately met. I was fortunate to be a student at Rutgers Newark in 1970 when there was an influx of Black and Brown students. They totally changed the school - revolutionary fervor plus academic brilliance. Out of that first group of students emerged some fine lawyers for the people, and community organizers and activists. So when we enter Conklin to continue today's fight for educational excellence and equity, let's give a shout-out to those who fought the fight decades ago.
I wish I could be there but the drive is a bit too far from TN.
